MY FIRST TRIP TO THE MALDIVES, VILAMENDHOO ISLAND
by JENNY WILSON
In April 2009, I set off from Gatwick, London to the Maldives, wondering to myself if all the pictures I had ever seen really were true?
From the moment I stepped off the plane in Malé I knew I had fallen in love with the Maldives, and yes all those pictures I have seen over the years really were true. Taking a sea plane (sea taxi) for the last leg of the journey to reach the beautiful island of Vilamendhoo. Flying over many islands, surrounded by fantastic blue waters on the way.
Staff are there straight away to help you with your things and guide you to the reception, where you receive a well needed coconut! From here you can do as much or as little as you wish during your stay, from simply sitting at the sunset bar to going on trips such as visiting near by Dhangethi (an inhabited island- islands are either tourist islands or inhabited islands-where only maldivian people live), to diving trips, day and night fishing trips, the wonderful Whale Shark trip and much more. As you may be able to tell, I did go on the Whale Shark trip and I actually swam with a 7m Whale Shark, which is one of the most wonderful experiences of my life. Even 'just' snorkeling around the island house reef i saw an amazing amount of marine life just a metre or two from the shore line.
Fruitbat's and Gecko's call to each other throughout the day and only confirm you really are in paradise.
I have never travelled so far to go on holiday and really didn't know what to expect, especially food, (as I can be quite fussy) but every meal time was like a banquet and there was always more than enough choice. All the effort it takes to get there is worth it, the only problem is having to put your shoes back on and get back on the plane to come home. Everyone is so friendly, helpful and kind combined with the setting and getting used to being relaxed, quite simply I didn't want to leave!
I am a photographer so I took many pictures of my stay and all that I experienced, I have made a book from the images I took and hope one day to go back and continue exploring more Maldivian Islands, before it's too late.

My book is Called, Take Only Memories, Leave Only Footprints, I produced this book as my final major project for college, it is a personal photographic study of my journey to the Maldives. I am in the process of making a soft cover version, which will have slightly less content and be more affordable.
