Surfing the Maldives

surfing the maldives

Over the last few years surfing the Maldives has become more popular with surfers from all over the world including Australians. Also there have been some big name competitions held here recently adding to its popularity.

The two main areas for surfing are; The North and South Male Atolls during the South-West monsoon season, from May to November, from May until August the waves are at their strongest but these areas can become crowded, so if you like some space it is better to visit either at the begining or the end of the season while there are still regular waves with more room.

Also distant Southern Atolls with surfing starting in February and ending in April and then from September until November, however the most famous breaks are in the North Male Atoll with waves from one to three metres in height and offer lefts and rights with long break points, professionals and beginners alike will be able to find something that suits their taste.

A perfect base and famous surfing island in the North Male Atoll and formally known as Lohifushi is Adaaran Hudhuranfushi which has a great spot called Lohis which is in front of this resort, it is an average to difficult spot with an excellent left hander, steep with two sections, with best conditions being on South-East swell with North-West winds. This resort has a dedicated area with accommodation for the travelling surfer and of course the Lohis bar to unwind after a hard day.
