game fishing in the maldives
The way the islands are formed it is possible to be in very deep water just a few hundred metres away from your resort, and with the abundance of game fish here such as bill fish, wahoo, large tuna, barracuda etc, you can catch some awsome fish and still be in sight of your beach.
Not all maldivian resorts cater for game fishing so you would need to check with your tour operator or direct with the resort if you would like to try this activity, however the maldivians are so helpful they would probably be able to arrange something with the local fishermen for you if this is not normally available on your particular island.
Some resorts have a speed boat with the chair on the back that you strap yourself into and when we stayed on sun island six of us spent an afternoon on one of these, each taking turns to be in the chair, in the end it was my son Ryan that caught the big fish, a large wahoo that took ages to reel in.
That night at the grill bar along with the sun set fishing catch the wahoo took centre stage, and although I am not a great fish eater, I have to say it was lovely.
You can also go game fishing on a dhoni which can be quite an experience, no rods or reels here just a hand line tied off on the side of the boat, not for the faint hearted but very exciting and worth a try.
