Whale Shark Spotting December to April

The Whale Shark season in the seas around Maamagilli,[South Ari Atoll] is from December to April. All dive schools in this area will put on trips to see the Whale sharks, Vilamendhoo springs to mind as a dedicated divers resort also Sun Island Resort is in a perfect location as a neighbor of Maamagilli Island, with some of the best scuba diving in the area.

Baa Atoll in August and September also has a fair share of sightings ie Reethi Beach Resort, Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru, Soneva Fushi etc.

The only downside to the Whale Shark season is that the water can get a bit soupy obviously that's why they are there and although not a major problem its worth bearing in mind if you are expecting 20+ metre visibility you could be out of luck, visit Whale Shark Facts for information on the largest fish in the ocean.

Manta Ray Sightings

Manta Rays can show up anywhere at any time but for virtually guaranteed sightings here are the best spots.

Banana Point South Male Atoll [Guraidhoo] April to July.

Manta Point South Male Atoll [Kandooma Resort] June to November.

Vilamendhoo South Ari Atoll [channels around the island] December to April.

Reethi Beach Resort Baa Atoll has an almost 100% chance of sightings from June to October on the house reef. This lies on a channel stretching out along the west side of the island and with a 30m drop of wall and resident spinner dolphins it sounds like great diving {I think I've got to go here soon].

For best the best scuba diving, visibility and Manta sightings, January to mid April around Filitheyo Island and Kuda Funafaru in the mid southern atolls [Faafu Atoll] ie cleaning stations around Kuda Falhu on the western side of the atoll.
